the context for the quote above is political timing. and the political reality that at the very least, for the purpose of maximizing the options available, it's useful to foster the impression that the president is open to charter change -if only as a smokescreen and like other palace moves, because hey, what if it works, then why not? that is the trivializing going on.

i've written before that we do need to focus on the civic imperative:

http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20080319-125753/The-civic-imperative-a-reflection

and also, that the wait till 2010 types do not want to turn a blind eye to wrongdoing but want to keep it within the orderly processes of law:

http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20080414-130177/The-2010-Movement

but that entire legal framwork is in trouble:

http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20081103-169887/Poisoned-fruit-of-the-Constitution

anbd that even if that doesn't happen, the existing situation is severely eroding, not strengthening, our institutions:

http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20080403-128014/The-destruction-of-the-presidency

nothing has budged and the only reason i can think of is that no one is willing to die so that she will die -or better yet, everyone knows bumping off someone doesn't solve anything. what would solve things is for the system to be given a chance to work, which it hasn't.

the danger here is some hotheads will take it upon themselves to impose a military solution and will probably fail along the way, which is why the institutional framework is necessary. but here i differ from others in that i believe public pressure is part of the institutional process.

this is precisely an effort to forestall regicide and cuadilloism on one hand, and the subversion of institutions from within on the other.
